- Ken Ehlers aligns the laser which hits the deuterium ice chip (this would be in the foreground, out of photo range). Physicist Ian Brown and plasma physics grad student Al Lietzke aided Ehlers in designing the system, including the pellet dropper, all of which was built at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
