- A computer image, generated on the x-ray fluorescence microprobe beamline, shows that chromium is drawn to highly localized chemical "hot spots" in the soil. The color scale ranges from blue, which is no chromium, to red-orange, which is a concentation of one picogram per square micrometer. the sample was taken from a polluted SanFrancisco Bay wetld.
