Title
John Lawerence interested in biological effects of neutrons
Description
John Lawrence became interested in the biological effects of neutrons during a 1935 visit to Berkeley and soon joined his brother's team. The reorganized laboratory was dedicated to nuclear science rather than, as in its first incarnation, to accelerator physics. This transformation, as we know, resulted from opportunities opened by the discoveries of artificial radioactivity and the biological action of neutron rays, and also, perhaps, from concern about the effects of the increasingly intensive neutron background on the men who worked around the accelerator. (The preceding information was excerpted from the text of the Fall 1981 issue of LBL Newsmagazine.)
