The 50th Anniversary Issue of the LBL News Magazine has been put into HTML for the dual purposes of providing public access to the history of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and demonstrating the usefulness of an online library of images.
In these pages, each photograph is included by a link; thus they are not local files, do not take up disk space, and need only to be maintained once. Also, each photo refers to a larger, higher resolution version of itself so that detail can be seen if the user so choses, but bandwidth is spared by defaulting to a smaller image.
The HTML pages are generated from source documents so that global format changes can be made; the photo layout is created with macros which are all defined in a single file. The documents that your browser sees are the result of running the source through a macro processor.
