Title
ALS storage ring radio frequency cavity.
Description
Advanced Light Source storage ring radio frequency cavity. As it emits synchrotron radiation, the electron beam loses energy, which must be replaced if the beam is to continue circulating in the storage ring. The energy is put back into the beam via two radio-frequency (rf) cavities (the copper structure at the right center in the photograph). In this way, the beam can continue to circulate for many hours while it gradually decays in intensity because of collisions between neighboring electrons in the beam, and between electrons in the beam and residual gas molecules in the storage-ring vacuum chamber.
